Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Small trees 3–15 m tall.

Stems: Stems many-branched, drooping, densely or sparsely hirsute to occasionally glabrate.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite. Blades elliptic to elliptic–oblanceolate or obovate, (55–)65–150 mm long, (21–)25–50 mm wide. Apex acuminate to occasionally acute, more or less mucronulate. Base attenuate to cuneate. Upper surfaces glabrous or sparsely to moderately coarsely tan pilose along midrib; lower surfaces densely to sparsely coarsely tan pilose along midrib and usually on lateral veins or glabrous. Margins entire. Pinnately veined. Petioles 9–28 mm long, usually pilose. Stipules 4.5–8 mm long, connate ⅓–1⁄2 their length, sometimes splitting, glabrous to pilose at base, margins sparsely pilose and dentate with a series of appendages, apex short–acuminate and with a conspicuous appendage.

Flowers: Flowers 3–6 per cluster, (5)6–8-merous, peduncles 2.5–16 mm long, tan pilose to glabrous. Flowers unisexual, dioecious, often heterostylous; insect-pollinated. Calyx of staminate flowers cup-shaped, usually slightly bilabiate, ca. 3 mm long, irregularly toothed; pistillate flowers with Calyx urceolate, 2–4 mm long, enlarging to 5–10 mm long in fruit, slightly irregularly toothed. Corolla of staminate flowers funnelform, ca. 8–9 mm long, the lobes ca. 5–6 mm long, often pubescent; pistillate flowers with corolla narrowly funnelform, 4–5 mm long, the lobes 2–2.5 mm long; nectary disk usually present. Stamens 4-5(-10), alternate with the corolla lobes, inserted at base of corolla tube; filaments long-exserted; anthers penduous, dithecal, opening by longitudinal slits. Ovary inferior, occasionally partly so, or very rarely superior, 2(-4)-celled; ovule 1 per cell, basal, anatropous; style as many as carpels, 2(-4)lobed, divided nearly to base, terminal, slender; stigmas lobed or capitate, long-exserted, papillose-hirsute, dry or occasionally wet.

Fruit: Fruit drupaceous; juicy; bright yellowish orange or yellowish red; ovoid; 7–13 mm long; apex with conspicuous persistent calyx; with 2(-4); 1-seeded; planoconvex pyrenes. Seeds with well-developed oily endosperm; or endosperm occasionally scanty or absent.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Mesic to wet forest; occasionally in subalpine woodland.

Elevation Range: 490–2,260 m.
